G.Skill introduces 3.40GHz DDR4 memory modules

G.Skill, a leading maker of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) modules for enthusiasts, has unveiled its first 3.40GHz DDR4 memory chips. While the company is not the first to announce 3.40GHz DDR4 solutions, it will be the first to actually ship appropriate DDR4 memory modules in volume.
G.Skill’s Ripjaws 4 new DDR4 memory modules are rated to run at 3400MHz with CL16 16-16-36 latency settings and 1.35V voltage. The memory sticks will be available in quad-channel 16GB (4GB*4) memory kits for Intel Core i7 “Haswell-E” high-end desktop platforms (HEDT). The new high-performance memory kits come with awesome Turbulence III memory fans.

According to G.Skill, the new Ripjaws 4 DDR4 3400MHz 16GB (4GBx4) memory kit is made from hand-picked DRAM devices during  a “highly-selective binning process.” The modules have been tested for compatibility on the Asus Rampage V Extreme and Gigabyte X99-SOC Champion motherboards, the manufacturer said.
G.Skill did not reveal the price of the new modules and memory kits, but given their exclusive specifications, do not expect them to be affordable.

Intel Skylake Could Feature Dual DDR3/DDR4 Memory Support with Double IMCs

[Not Confirmed] An interesting point raised by the Italian publication Bitsandchips.it, stated that Intel has tucked away a very big hint pertaining to memory support in its IDF14 slide deck. Upon closer inspection the hint is about DDR3 and DDR4 support at the same time probably utilizing a Dual-IMC design . The market is now moving toward DDR4 but its prices remain quite high, so it might be possible that Intel will introduce the above-mentioned tech to hasten the transition.Intel Broadwell and Skylake Platform

Dual-IMC with DDR3 and DDR4 Support Could Grace Skylake Processors – Hints IDF14 Slides

As we told you a long time ago and as Intel later confirmed in IDF14, Skylake-S is coming in 2H 2015, most probably July. These will be quad cores and will come in i5 and i7 variants with 4 and 8 threads respectively. Skylake will of course also arrive on mobile platforms and 2-in 1 devices before the desktop release. If you notice the slide deck below, specifically the one on the right, you will notice that Intel mentions “DDR3 and DDR4″ in the “future” section of the Mainstream segment. Now Intel has noted down Haswell Micro-architecture, so its near future is Broadwell and Skylake-S.
So what does ‘DDR3 and DDR4′ support for the future generations of Intel Haswell mean? Well, one option could be offering some SKUs with DDR3 and other with DDR4, but that would be awfully inconvenient from a marketing and practical point of view. Not only would that discourage growth (DDR3 users will simply buy the DDR3 variant and stick with it) but that will result in disparity between similar products: not an ideal scenario. No, a far easier option would be to introduce dual memory support using a Double IMC (Integrated Memory Circuit) on the processors. A question that comes to mind is whether Broadwell-k will benefit from Double-IMCs as well, or will the rift between the high end and mainstream will grow ever larger.
Intel believes that the pricing of DDR4 will remain high; as will the demand of Skylake processors. Migration to DDR4 should be encouraged but you can’t leave the majority of your user base behind. The answer to this dilemma lies in the company introducing Skylake with both DDR3 and DDR4 support. Intel will favor the use of DDR4 memory but if this is correct than users will not need to be worry about buying new RAMs and instead be able to focus on the new micro-architecture and step up when they are ready. DDR4 not only offers faster RAM memory  with double the density but also offers a greatly lowered electrical foot print with reduced power requirements. DDR4 RAM can be clocked upto 3200Mhz and requires 1.2V of juice to run. CAS latency will vary from 9 to 24 (DDR3 wad 5-14) while density increases from 4GB at 8 banks to 8GB at 16 banks.

G.Skill adds 3333MHz DDR4 memory modules into lineup

G.Skill this week added two new DDR4 options into the lineup of its memory modules. The new quad-channel memory kits for Intel Corp.’s latesthigh-end desktop “Haswell-E” platforms run at industry-leading frequencies of 3300MHz/3333MHz.
The new “extreme high-end” Ripjaws 4-series DDR4 memory modules come in 16GB quad-channel kits. G.Skill’s latest DDR4 memory solutions are rated to run at 3300MHz or 3333MHz with CL16 16-16-36 latency settings at 1.35V voltage. G.Skill claims that the modules are fully validated on the Asus Rampage V Extreme X99 motherboard. The Ripjaws 4 memory modules with clock-rates over 2400MHz support Intel XMP 2.0 for automatic and trouble-free tuning.
gskill ripjaws black ddr4 1024x293 G.Skill adds 3333MHz DDR4 memory modules into lineup
Quite naturally, the new ultra-high-end DDR4 memory modules from G.Skill cost significantly more than slightly slower solutions. For example, the Ripjaws 3200MHz 16GB DDR4 kit costs $469 in the U.S., whereas the Ripjaws 3300MHz 16GB DDR4 kits is priced at whopping $579. The cost of the 3333MHz quad-channel kit is unclear, but a rumour has it that it will carry rather incredible $699 price-tag.

AMD Discusses Next Gen FX CPUs, 20nm GPUs, 5-Way CrossfireX, FreeSync & DDR4

Last Thursday Roy Taylor AMD’s VP of Global Channel Sales made an appearance in MaximumPC’s no BS podcast primarily to sit down with Origin PC’s CEO Kevin Wasielewski & discuss the situation that had occurred back in October of last year which revolved around Origin PC ceasing to offer AMD GPUs to customers.
Both parties cleared the air and made amends. But a LOT of very exciting information was revealed in the process. So without any further delay lets get into the juicy bits !
AMD Dragon

Next Gen HEDT FX CPUs & 20nm GPUs in the Works

So lets get the relatively less exciting stuff out of the way first. Roy Taylor AMD’s VP of Global Channel sales discussed AMD’s R9 285 graphics card coming in September 2nd powered by the all new Tonga GPU which promises incredible performance at significantly higher power efficiency compared to AMD’s current R9 280 graphics card. We covered this already in great detail here.
Roy Taylor also discussed AMD’s upcoming FX 8370, 8370E & 8320E CPUs based on the Piledriver core micro-architecture & the Vishera series of CPUs.
The 8370 & 8370E will be clocked slightly higher than the 8350 with the 8370E being a 95W alternative to the 125W 8370. The FX 8320E will be a 95W alternative to the current 125W FX 8320 with identical core clocks. We’ve also already covered this in great detail here.

Next Generation FX Processors In The Works !

No let’s get into the really exciting stuff. Roy Taylor has emphatically stated that the FX line of AMD CPUs has been very successful & tremendously popular & that AMD will continue to be dedicated to the high-end CPU market & not just APUs, saying
“We understand that we have a very strong fan base (referring to FX). When I tweeted that something new was coming regarding the water cooled [FX 9590] retail box I was astonished at the reaction of everybody wanting a new FX processor. All I want to say to everybody that tweeted & E-Mailed me directly; your voices are very heard and we’re paying close attention but we can’t comment right now on stuff which is unannounced“
AMD FX-8370
This must be music to every enthusiast’s ears, a strong AMD back in the fistfight (figuratively) with Intel means faster cheaper CPUs for everybody. So AMD has something in the pipeline that’s going to be a true successor to the FX series & a genuinely next generation product rather than the higher clocked, lower TDP parts which are coming in September 2nd.
My personal guess would be that this is likely to either come with the Excavator CPU core micro-architecture by the end of next year or afterwards with the yet unnamed next generation high performance X86 K12 sister core which personally think is the more plausible option.

When will AMD adopt DDR4 memory ?

When it came to DDR4 Roy Taylor had this to say
“Right now DDR4 is hard to get & is very expensive but it won’t take very long for that to change & whatever is faster for gamers & whatever offers more performance we want to be involved with & all I can tell you is that we’re watching very closely that space”
Crucial DDR4 Server Memory
So it seems our prior conjecture was correct, AMD is simply waiting for DDR4 to be more cost/performance effective in comparison to DDR3 which makes sense especially for gamers & consumer level end-users in general. We’ve already heard official news of DDR4 support by AMD with their upcoming Seattle ARM based server platform & their upcoming Toronto “Excavator” based server platform as well. So it’s very much a toss up at the moment in guessing if AMD will have DDR4 support in their mainstream consumer chipsets next year. We’ll have to wait and see how much DDR4 progresses in price and availability throughout the upcoming months.

20nm GPUs in the Works !

“Any chance of a 20nm GPU ?”
Radeon R9 295X2Roy “Of course we’ll always look to improve, again we can’t comment on unannounced products”
The hosts then jokingly pressured Roy to add more details knowing that he can’t, Jimmy Thang one of the hosts then went on to say “So the answer is yes they’re looking into it” & Roy replied with “Of course”.
Again this confirms our previous analysis that AMD will not follow suit and skip 20nm like Nvidia is allegedly planning. This means that we might indeed get truly next generation GPU products based on 20nm fairly soon since TSMC has begun 20nm volume production 3 months ago and 16nm is still at least 3-6 months away.

Possibility of 5-Way CrossfireX ?

“The new X99 [platform] seems to have the ability to run 5 GPUs are there any plans by card makers to enable 5-Way GPU support ?”
AMD Crossfire XDMA EngineRoy answered by saying “That’s a great question” “We’ve been astonished, there seems to be no end to the appetite for multi-GPU systems” & then Roy turned to Kevin, Origin PCs CEO & he showed an equally great level of enthusiasm & excitement.
AMD seemed to be very open to the idea of extending multi-GPU support beyond 4 GPUs but real limitations exist in the complexity of the driver software needed to drive such a setup as well as the impracticality of having so many GPUs in one system and the resulting noise & heat. But it really comes down to what the customers want in the end & if AMD & Nvidia for that matter see strong interest in this concept they are sure to pursue it it valiantly.

Availability of FreeSync Monitors ?

“How soon are we going to see FreeSync monitors ?”
Beware many puns lay ahead !
Roy Taylor
“I’m very very keen on FreeSync because I think free is much better than G”
“We’ll start to sample in Q4 & certainly by the end of Q4 the beginning of Q1 they’ll be available to purchase”
“Being able to give superb gaming experience completely stutter free without having to pay a particular company a surcharge is a wonderful thing & that’s why I’m just fabulously keen on FreeSync”
AMD Freesync TechSpot Image
Then MaximumPC’s Associate Editor Tom McNamera asks “There’s no licensing fee for FreeSync” ? & Roy Answers “No FreeSync is an industry standard anyone could adopt it”  Roy follows with a Tongue-in-cheek comment “We believe in open standards”.
So there you have it folks, FreeSync monitor reviews should go up in the few upcoming months & you should be able to buy a FreeSync monitor just shortly afterwards. The technology is based on the industry standard Adaptive-Sync technology in DisplayPort 1.2a and will not add any additional cost to monitors according to Richard Huddy, AMD’s Chief Gaming Scientist.

Samsung begins to produce 64GB DDR4 modules based on TSV chips

Samsung Electronics on Tuesday said that has started to produce 64GB DDR4 memory modules that are powered by DDR4 memory chips that feature three dimensional (3D) “through silicon via” (TSV) package technology. The DRAM [dynamic random access memory] modules are designed for enterprise servers.
Samsung’s 64GB registered dual inline memory modules (RDIMMs) feature 36 DDR4 memory chips, each of which consists of four 4Gb DDR4 DRAM devices made using 20nm-class process technology. The DDR4 dies are pierced to contain hundreds of holes and then are vertically connected through electrodes that are passed through the holes. Samsung’s 64GB memory modules operate at 2133MHz.
samsung 64gb tsv ddr4 dram module scheme Samsung begins to produce 64GB DDR4 modules based on TSV chips
Samsung claims that the new 64GB TSV DDR4 modules perform twice as fast as a 64GB module that uses wire bonding packaging, while consuming about 50 per cent the power.
Since DDR4 memory controllers support limited amount of RDIMMs per channel, memory makers need to create high-density memory modules in order to enable servers with extreme amounts of memory. In order to quickly grow densities of memory chips and modules, makers of DRAM chips will have to use the TSV technology going forward. In the future, Samsung believes that it will be able to stack more than four DDR4 dies using its 3D TSV technology, to create even higher density DRAM chips and modules.
“Samsung is reinforcing its competitive edge in the DRAM market with its new state-of-the-art solution using its 3D TSV technology, while driving growth in the global DRAM market,” said Jeeho Baek, vice president, memory marketing, Samsung Electronics. “By introducing highly energy-efficient DDR4 modules assembled with 3D TSV, we’re taking a big step ahead of the mainstream DDR4 market, which should dramatically expand with the expected introduction of next-generation CPUs in the second half of this year.”

The new 64GB DDR4 memory chips from Samsung will be available inside servers based on the new-generation Intel Xeon E5 “Haswell-EP” processors that support DDR4 memory in the coming months.
Earlier this year SK Hynix demonstrated a 128GB DDR4 memory module based on 4-layer 8Gb DRAMs connected using TSV. Such modules are expected to emerge in 2015.

AMD Toronto APU Will Feature Dual IMC Both DDR3 and DDR4 Will Be Supported

An interesting update on AMD’s Tornoto Platform has appeared. It would seem that AMD is going to allow DDR3 and DDR4 support simaltenously on this particular platform. The leak source is Bitsandchips.it and they detail AMD’s decision about including dual IMC support on Toronto APU.AMD Opteron APU Roadmap

AMD Toronto APU and CPUs will Include Dual IMCs for DDR3 and DDR4 Support

The Toronto APU and CPU are part of the AMD Opteron platform and are going to feature Excavator cores. A previously leaked roadmap showed that the Toronto SoCs will either support DDR3 or DDR4 memory, but now it would appear that they are going to support both thanks to Dual IMCs (Integrated Memory Controller). AMD has previously steered clear of DDR4 memory partly because the Industry hasn’t grown accustomed to it and partly because it costs an arm and a leg. However, they seemed to have reversed that decision. The Opteron platform currently houses the Berlin APU and Toronto is the successor of the same with the next revision of Bulldozer architecture. Both the APU and CPUs will have 4 x86 Excavator cores.

Carrizo was supposed to have DDR4 Memory but this was abandoned (according to latest reports) due to the high cost of the memory in question. So why has AMD decided to give Toronto processors this benefit? Well the reasoning is simple. Even though DDR4 is expensive, the expense only applies to consumer markets. Server markets exist on a very strict cost and value model and only the relative expense per performance increase matters to them. Simply put, the Server Market would be indifferent to the expense that DDR4 entails. Another factor is the fact that DDR4 memory can support higher memory densities while having lower power consumption than DDR3. These two factors are once again something very important for the server markets that operate on a Performance-Per-Watt model. Finally, this would make the Toronto APUs and CPUs future proof for when DDR4 does become cheaper than DDR3 (around 2016). The source is also hopeful that we will be seeing stacked DRAM on the Mobility platform of Carrizo APU as well, something which should have very positive effects on the performance of the next gen APU.

MSI X99S SLI Plus Motherboard

MSI has been slowly foraging into the black aesthetics but this is the first time they have featured a single color All-Black motherboard. The color is reminiscent of Black Gold and is a more deeper black than anything else I have seen, including ASUS’s X79 Black and EVGA X79 Dark. This aesthetic is very unique because cool black shade extends not only over the PCB but over all the components as well. Something that hasn’t really been spotted before.MSI X99S SLI Plus Motherboard

MSI X99S SLI Plus Motherboard Unveiled – Features X99 Chipset with All-Black Aesthetic

The box that the motherboard ships in also follows the calm black gradient and professional look that the X99S chooses to go for. The exact specifications of the motherboard are not known but since this is a very high end motherboard you can expect all the features of a X99 Flagship motherboard. Now MSI has thankfully provided us with a high quality image of the motherboard so we can deduce some of the features ourselves. Specifications of the motherboard (by eye):
  • 8 Memory Slots with Quad Channel DDR4 Support
  • M.2 Sata Express Slot
  • 8 Phase PWM Design
  • 40 PCIE Lanes (capable of Quad SLI/Crossfire)
  • 10 SATA Ports 6GB/s
  • 14 USB Ports
  • LGA 2011-3 Socket with x99 Chipset “Wellsburg”
  • Will Support Haswell-E i7-5960X, i7-5930K and i7-5820K
To sum it up, The MSI X99S SLI Plus motherboard comes with an 8 Phase PWM supply fitted with MSI’s Military Class IV components which include military grade capacitors and MOSFETs. The LGA 2011-3 CPU socket is surrounded by eight DDR4 DIMM slots which will be able to support overclocked memory up to 3000 MHz+. The motherboard has a beastly design that is incorporated in a ATX form factor. Both black colored heatsinks cover the VRM and X99 PCH featuring a distinct design scheme. Storage includes 10 SATA 6 GB/s ports and a single SATA Express port at the bottom left corner of the board. There’s a USB 3.0 right-angled header right next to the storage outputs. Power is provided through a single 8-Pin connector and the regular 24-Pin ATX power connector.

Expansion slots include four PCI-e 3.0 x16 slots and two PCI-e 3.0 x1 slots for quad-way SLI and CrossFireX multi-GPU support. Since this is a targeted motherboard for SLI, it will be optimized for dual-GPU operation. Bottom of the slots, we can spot a OC Genie, Power On/Off and Reset switches. The I/O panel is bundled with many ports which include USB, PS/2, Gigabit LAN. MSI has used an 8 Layer PCB which provides stability and more bruteness to the design itself. The packaging is also great and simplistic and we can’t wait to test this out ourselves once Haswell-E hits the road.

Now this motherboard is not only good looking but full of features as well. The CPUs that are going to sit in that socket have a TDP of 140W and thanks to the IVR (Integrated Voltage Regulator) you can expect a rock solid supply to the die for overclocking. AVX 2.0 Instruction set is supported. The motherboard features the OC Genie technology. I cant make out the Audio Codec because the picture isnt that high res but boy does the mobo look good. The one thing I really like is that unlike previous ventures into All Black motherboards where many of the components and capacitors remained of different colors, you have a very strict and religiously followed black scheme here. This new devotion to the Black Gold aesthetic makes the old attempts look almost untidy in comparison. Needless to say, if you are going for a super high end build, you are going to want to keep an eye out for this motherboard. MSI is launching X99S SLI Plus motherboard on the 29th of August and rumor has it, along with 7 other X99 Motherboards.
