LG to launch IPS monitor with ‘true 4K’ resolution

LG is set to launch a new IPS monitor sporting ‘true 4K’ resolution (4096×2160), the new panel is aimed at professionals and is marketed as a ‘Digital Cinema 4K monitor’.
Most 4K monitors on the market have a 3840×2160 resolution but the Ultra HD resolution is an easy to work with multiple of 1920×1080. The actual industry standard for 4K is 4096×2160, giving an aspect ratio of 17:9, making the monitor ideal for content creators as videos won’t need to be scaled down to fit the screen.
1 w 600 LG to launch IPS monitor with true 4K resolution
The LG 31MU97 is clearly aimed at professionals in all areas, it features  a large 31.5 Inch 10-bit color IPS panel, rather than the 8-bit TN panels we usually see on gaming 4K monitors. The LG panel is calibrated to 99.5 per cent of Adobe RGB space as well. Additionally, LG has calibrated the monitor to cover 97 per cent of DCI-P3 color space.
Hyoung-sei Park, head of the IT business division at LG Electronics, stated that LG hopes that this monitor will “solidify” the company’s “leadership in the global professional monitor market”.
“This monitor’s high-end features and functions make it the perfect solution for professionals who require a top-of-the-line monitor with all the technology currently available.”
The monitor will of course come with a stand that supports height and tilt adjustments as well as pivoting. Mini-Displayport, DisplayPort and two HDMI interfaces are available for connectivity.
Obviously with professional features comes a professional price tag. This monitor will set buyers back $1399.99.

Samsung unveils 27-inch curved monitor for gamers

Samsung Electronics has introduced its first curved display designed for gamers and multimedia enthusiasts. The company claims that its new monitor has a wider field of view than flat 27” panels, which also makes the display seem bigger than 27”. Unlike custom-built curved displays available previously, Samsung’s SD590C will be priced relatively affordably.
The Samsung SD590C display is based on a VA panel that sports 1920*1080 resolution, 178-/178-degrees viewing angles, 4ms response time as well as 60Hz refresh rate. The product features Samsung’s 3000:1 mega dynamic contrast ratio technology as well as Game Mode, which detects changes in scenes, enhances the colour and alters the screen’s contrast. The monitor features a D-sub, an HDMI and a Display Port ports as well as built-in stereo speakers.

Nvidia: We will focus on G-Sync, not Adaptive-Sync

Nvidia Corp. on Friday told KitGuru that it will focus solely on its proprietary G-Sync technology and not on a potentially competing Adaptive-Sync, which will become available sometimes in 2015. According to Nvidia, G-Sync-enabled graphics cards and monitors are available today, which is why it is natural to concentrate on development of appropriate eco-system.
“Nvidia is solely focused on delivering the best gaming experience with G-Sync – which is shipping and available today from leading monitor OEMs,” said Luciano Alibrandi, a spokesman for Nvidia.
nvidia g sync display 1024x614 Nvidia: We will focus on G Sync, not Adaptive Sync
Nvidia’s G-Sync technology, which was introduced about a year ago, is designed to enable tearing- and stutter-free gaming along with low input latency by dynamically matching a GPU’s rendering rate with display’s refresh rate. G-Sync is supported by Nvidia’s GeForce GTX graphics cards and multiple monitors from various vendors.
AMD’s FreeSync and VESA’s Adaptive-Sync technologies are designed for the same purpose as Nvidia’s G-Sync and work in a similar way. Unfortunately, at present, neither Adaptive-Sync nor FreeSync technologies are available on the market in any form.
Since Adaptive-Sync and FreeSync technologies are based on an eDP [embedded DisplayPort] feature called Panel Self-Refresh, which has been supported by many notebook graphics processing units for years, it should not be a significant technical problem to enable VESA’s Adaptive-Sync on almost any modern desktop GPU, including solutions from AMD, Intel or Nvidia.
nvidia aoc g sync display 1024x1024 Nvidia: We will focus on G Sync, not Adaptive Sync
Earlier this week it was reported that Nvidia could support Adaptive-Sync technology. Since the Adaptive-Sync is not available in any commercial form, Nvidia naturally cannot support it and will focus on its proprietary G-Sync in the foreseeable future instead.
Nvidia did not reveal whether it could hypothetically support Adaptive-Sync if monitors featuring the technology become widespread. Given the answer, it looks like the company does not have such plans right now.

Dell 34-inch Ultrasharp U3415W curved ultra-wide monitor

Dell has revealed a new ultra-wide monitor as part of its Ultrasharp range. The Dell Ultrasharp U3415W is the company's first curved screen monitor. As you might guess from the U34 prefix it is a 34-inch display. It offers users a 21:9 ratio wide screen with a resolution of 3440x1440 pixels. This monitor has been a long time coming with rumours of its launch as far back as a year ago.
Perfect for gamers and game developers
Dell says that this new monitor is "the perfect display" for gamers. Explaining that assertion we are told that the U3415W's curvature and ultra-wide view "work together to give gamers a competitive edge, requiring less eye movement when compared to a flat panel display and enabling players to take advantage of their peripheral vision when the competition heats up." Game developers will also be delighted by the U3415W, apparently, as it provides "the ultimate canvas for enhanced productivity and creativity". I'm sure these two PC user niches aren't the only ones who would love this monitor on their desks.
Dell U3415W key specifications
  • Screen: 34-inches diagonal, curved display, 21:9 ratio, 3440x1440 pixels, ultra-thin bezels
  • Refresh: 60Hz
  • Speakers: dual integrated 9 watt speakers
  • Connections: HDMI 2.0, MHL, DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort
  • Stand: fully adjustable
Dell claims it is the first to unveil a curved 34-inch monitor with the reveal of this Ultrasharp U3415W. However we did see an official release from LG detailing its curved 34-inch monitor with Thunderbolt connectivity a fortnight ago. LG's display will be on show at IFA, Berlin later this week.
The Dell Ultrasharp U3415W will become available in China in November and globally from December. We weren't provided with any pricing indications.

Samsung Announces U32D970Q with 4k PLS Panel

Samsung is ready to release the U32D970Q 4k PLS based monitor. The unit features a 3840 x 2160 resolution. The panel offers an 8ms G2G response time, 1000:1 contrast ratio, 350 cd/m2 brightness and 178/178 viewing angles.
The wide gamut LED backlighting offers 99.5% Adobe RGB coverage and the colour depth is also 10-bit, seemingly without the use of FRC according to the specs. The screen comes factory calibrated with a dE of <1 and also boasts a guaranteed uniformity of >90% (meaning that the greatest deviation ‘accepted’ in the factory between the brightest and dimmest of 25 measured points on the screen is 10%). It has a 16-bit LUT (Look-Up Table) for enhanced colour precision. The monitor features hardware calibration, meaning users can modify the LUT directly with a compatible colorimeter. The display offers an sRGB and Adobe RGB emulation mode as well. There are also a number of other modes designed with specific colour standards in mind; EBU (European Broadcasting Union), Rec709 (HDTV standard), SMPTE-C (Analogue SD standard), DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) and DICOM (Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine). There also seems to be a mode to allow the screen to be split in half, with different colour space modes used for each half. Another nice feature includes ‘Quad PBP’, which is the ability to output content in Full HD from 4 devices simultaneously in a Picture By Picture mode.
The screen features a thin bezel design, with the stand offering a full range of tilt, height, swivel and rotate adjustments. The ports on the monitor include 2x DisplayPort 1.2, Dual-Link DVI, HDMI 1.4, 4x USB 3.0 ports and 3.5mm audio output. This monitor is designed primarily for PC users and requires the use of DP 1.2 to output 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz. The brushed-effect rear plate around the stand can be removed with the stand itself to expose 100 x 100mm and 200 x 200mm VESA holes. The display is also specifically marketed as being "flicker safe" so will feature a PWM-free backlight.
The monitor is expected to be released from August in selected Asian markets and reach other regions such as the UK and US later (possibly October). The monitor currently retails for 2,090,000 South Korean Won, which is around £1230 ($2050 USD) to give a rough indication of price.

LG 34UC97 34-inch 21:9 curved monitor to be unveiled at IFA 2014

LG Electronics' is set to unveil what it calls the "world's first 21:9 curved IPS ultrawide monitor" at IFA 2014 early next month. It's a 34-inch screen with 3440 x 1440 pixels and Thunderbolt 2 support. The firm will also showcase a new 24-inch gaming monitor with a refresh rate of 144Hz and incorporating several gaming focussed LG technologies.
LG 34UC97 34-inch QHD curved UltraWide monitor
The innovative South Korean technology company says that its upcoming 34-inch monitor (model 34UC97) will be the first ever to incorporate a curved IPS screen with a 21:9 aspect ratio. It is targeted at power users, such as those in the creative businesses who would appreciate the extra screen real estate. Of course some entertainment enthusiasts may also value the expansive desktop view supplied by this monitor.
"Many people spend more time in front of computer monitors than they do in front of TV sets and yet the industry’s biggest monitor manufacturers don't seem to innovate at the same pace as TV manufacturers," mused Hyoung-sei Park, head of the IT Business Division at LG Electronics' Home Entertainment Company. "At LG, innovation in display technologies isn't just limited to our market-leading TV products but are actively being implemented in our advanced PC monitors. And that's why we're particularly proud to be introducing at IFA the world's first 21:9 Curved UltraWide monitor with a curved IPS display which delivers a wide 178-degree viewing angle for an immersive viewing experience."
The monitor utilises a Quad HD resolution display (with 3440x1440 pixels) and is compatible with both PCs and Macs. It supports Thunderbolt 2 connectivity for both fast data transfers and the ability to daisy chain devices. LG hasn't neglected the built-in sound system to complement the visuals and has equipped the 34UC97 with a 7W stereo speaker system from Maxx Audio.
LG 24GM77 24-inch gaming monitor
Along with the flagship 34-inch curved monitor, detailed above, LG will present a new advanced Gaming Monitor, designed for serious gamers. The 24GM77 features a refresh rate of 144Hz, which can ensure a smooth and flicker-free display during even the most fast-paced and intense modern games action.
LG's Dynamic Action Sync (DAS) Mode can cut input lag drastically, we are told. The monitor's Black Stabilizer provides consistent blacks across different scenes and within its optimised hot-key triggered Game Modes. Motion 240, developed exclusively for the LG Gaming Monitor, helps to minimise motion blur, offering a response time of less than 1ms.
There is no information available on the prices or the availability of these monitors at the time of writing. IFA 2014 takes place in Berlin from 5th to 10th September.

AOC 144Hz G-Sync Monitor!

AOC is set to release a new “high end” gaming monitor next month, featuring Nvidia’s G-Sync technology coupled with a 144Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time. These three features should eliminate screen tearing as well as any possible ghosting effects.
The AOC press release says:
“The g2460Pg redraws the screen more than twice as fast as conventional 60 Hz displays, making eye fatigue and screen tearing problems of the past. Gone are the days of missed targets because of stuttering images that can occur on monitors with low refresh rates. In addition, the integrated DisplayPort connector is the ideal input option for fast and seamless image transmission. Not only do the in-game environments come to life in one super-smooth movement, but also at a 1920 x 1080 Full HD resolution and in vibrant, bright colours, thanks to a luminosity of 350 cd/cm².”
g2460Pg_front_to_left_codaw_logo
“The g2460Pg’s impressive performance does not come at the cost of sustainability. It comes with the intelligent software solutions Eco Mode and e-Saver to drive down energy consumption. The display also fulfills strict regulations such as EnergyStar 6.0 and TCO 6.0. As with all of its monitors, AOC offers a 3 year warranty with on-site exchange service.”
This new monitor won’t break the bank either, it will be available by the end of next month for £369.

Hopefully down here in Australia we can see it around the same time and for a respectable price.

Life With Samsung U28D590D!

After living with the Samsung 4K Monitor U28D590D for over a week now I am surprisingly falling in love with it. Despite a few minor set backs I am happy with the purchase.

The TN Panel my not be the best for colour representation and viewing angles but for me it is not as big a problem. My eye sight is already pretty bad and moving from a 1080p monitor to 4K it is like a god send. No more straining my eyes.

One of the major downside would also have to be the stand as ASUS and AOC have bought 28" 4K monitors to the marked with some pretty amazing stand that allow for VESA and complete control.

One thing I would have liked would be for the Monitor to at least be 30 inches, Its not that big of a problem but I feel the extra 2 inches would make the experience a lot more immersing. The brightness on this panel is out standing Images are sharp bright and just look a whole lot better.

When working in Windows 8.1 I find that a lot of the programs are yet to be optimized  for 4K, the main one being Chrome. which just drives me crazy but lucky enough I run a Hackintosh so I get the best of both worlds.

In OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 4K optimisation has been drastically improved, they scaling options are far better than Windows 8.1 for now. Basically if I need to web browse or edit anything I will switch across to OS X, If I want to game in 4K obviously I will use Windows 8.1.

On the topic of gaming you will definitely want a pretty beasty system I am currently running 2 x EVGA GeForce GTX 780 in SLI and getting more than playable performance out of them. Gaming in Ultra is just beautiful especially when you play Bioshock Infinite you will just be blow away buy the detail.

All in all this is a great purchase for the value and with 4K become the norm be sure to stay tuned and get more info on whats around the corner.

Have a look at the video below for some more information:
