Windows 8 users can upgrade to Windows 9 for free

A spokes person from Microsoft Indonesia had a little slip of the tongue and said that Windows 8 users can upgrade to Windows 9 for free. Two rumors are now debunked, yes Microsoft will be announcing Windows 9 and yes you get to have a free upgrade.
Once Windows 9 is released all the end-users needs to do is to hit windows update, after which Windows 9 will be installed automatically. Microsoft is holding a secret event on September the 30th and it is expected that that they will launch the successor of Windows 8 that was developed under codename Threshold.
From leaked screenshots it is apparent that Microsoft will introduce a new start menu with live tile integration, Modern UI apps with windows display and notification system. Microsoft will also inject the digital assistant Cortana into Windows 9.

Microsoft Windows 9 to support 8K UHD resolution, improved scaling

One of the things that Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 8 operating system is criticized for is poor scaling. As a result, it is sometimes inconvenient to work on Windows 8-based PCs with high-resolution/high-DPI displays. According to a new media report, the next Windows operating system will address such issues.
PCPortal web-site has revealed that the latest builds of Windows 9 “Threshold” OS support new 768*768 pixel icons, which will be needed when users work in ultra-high resolutions. It is also claimed that maximum resolution for a single display supported by the new operating system is 8K (7680*4320). Besides, it is reported that Microsoft has greatly improved its graphics scaling technology in order to better display classic applications on monitors with high pixel density.

The results of the changes are hard to overestimate since they will enable PC makers to build Windows-based machines with retina-class screens. While there are many notebooks with high-res displays today, they are not always comfortable to use since icons and other elements get very small on them.
Microsoft Windows 9 will be formally introduced later this month. It is expected that the new operating system will be released commercially in the first half of 2015.

Microsoft Confirms Windows 9 Launch Date 30th September

Microsoft Corp. on Monday began to send invitations to the event where it plans to formally introduce its next-generation Windows 9 operating system. The event will take place in San Francisco, California, on the 30th of September, 2014.
The Verge reports that the event, which will focus on enterprise and power users of Windows, will be hosted by Joe Belfiore and Terry Myerson. It is also expected that Microsoft will deliver public technical preview of its Windows Next shortly after the event.
As previously reported, the Windows 9 “Threshold” is designed for all three major types of devices, such as personal computers, tablets and smartphones. The new operating system will also be Microsoft’s first OS which will be released under the new chief executive officer, Satya Nadella.

It is projected that the Windows 9 OS will include changes designed to improve usability by users who are familiar with Windows XP, Vista and 7. Among other things, Microsoft plans to return the fully-fledged desktop, “Start” menu as well as run apps designed with Metro (Modern) interface in mind in windows. In addition, Windows 9 “Threshold” will support virtual desktops, which will allow users to easily switch between groups of apps and therefore organize their PCs and workflow better. Yet another user interface change with Threshold is elimination of the charms bar, an overlay that currently provides access to search, sharing, the Start screen, hardware devices and settings.
It is expected that Microsoft will launch its Windows 9 commercially in the first half of 2015.

Windows 9 could be revealed September 30th

New reports are suggesting that we could see Windows 9 revealed at the end of September, the OS is supposedly codenamed ‘Threshold’ and will hopefully have a smoother launch than Windows 8, which many PC users still refuse to upgrade to, despite the improvements it brings.
This news came from The Verge, citing sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans. Coincidentally, this lines up well with other rumours we’ve heard over the last few weeks. For example, ZDnet recently reported that Microsoft will be releasing a Windows 9 preview at the end of next month, a rumour that now looks much more likely. The preview should give us an early look at the return of the start menu, which is said to feature live tiles in addition to traditional icons.

Aside from the return of the start menu, we may see the ‘Charms bar’ go away in Windows 9. Current builds of Threshold contain an early version of Cortana, the Windows Phone assistant- it is possible that Microsoft might be thinking about bringing the feature to desktops, much like Apple is rumoured to be doing with Siri at the moment.

At the press event on the 30th of September, Microsoft will go over the Operating System’s new key features, it might also talk more about upcoming changes to Windows RT and Windows Phone.

Microsoft Windows 8.1 August Update Coming Soon

New information that has just appeared reveals interesting details about the upcoming update of Windows 8.1 and the anxiously awaited Windows 9. ZDNet tells us that the upcoming update 2 (referred to as August Update) will not be a compulsory update for the operating system and will be the last major update for Windows 8.1. Meaning the next thing we see is Windows 9 finally landing.

Windows 9 May be Closer than Expected – August Update to be the last Windows 8.1 Update

Interestingly, Update 1 had been tagged as a compulsory update while as Update 2 wont be. Infact, it will be a relatively minor update and will simply be referred to, as the August Update. Now the source says that there won’t be an Update 3. The only eventuality in which an update 3 is released is one in which Microsoft decides to do so just for the sake of continuity and establishing a ‘serviceability’ pattern.  In all probability however, the source alleges, we will not be seeing the Update 3 at all. Infact the next stop is Windows 9 with all the goodness of the new start menu that we have been waiting so long for.

The August Update is coming on August 12 and will land dead center on Patch Tuesday. It would appear that Microsoft will not be making a very big deal out of this particular update and it wont contain any big feature changes. Though some design adjustments will be present, there is a reason Microsoft will be tagging it as non-compulsory.  Also it will probably be pushed just as another Monthly update. Apparently, all the folks over at Microsoft will be putting their energy behind Windows Threshold/Windows 9 to make sure it is completely stream lined and bug free at launch. The source indicates that Microsoft might even cut Windows XP, Vista and especially Windows 7 Users (50% of the entire user base I might add) some kind of deal by giving them a free upgrade to Windows 9 directly. All of this, just to get the somewhat stagnant Windows loyalists to get a move on. I have a feeling however, that the only real factor in triggering a migration will be if Windows 9 truly hits home.
