Full AMD Tonga GPU might feature 384-bit memory interface

Rumor: AMD Tonga has 384-bit interface

Update: Shortly after publishing this post I received a confirmation that Tonga XT indeed has 384b interface.
PC Watch made an interview with Raja Koduri, during R9 285 launch in India (yesterday). They gathered some intel about full Tongan architecture, however they do not say if it was straight from Koduri.
Either way, they are quite confident that full Tonga has six memory controllers, each 64-bit wide, which basically means full Tonga has 384-bit bus.
Full Tonga would pack 32 Compute Units with 2048 Stream Cores in total. This is basically means Tonga and Tahiti share the same configuration.

PCWatch also reports that Tonga is HSA-compatible, and unlike Kaveri (which is in third stage), Tonga would be in the final fourth state of HSA implementation.
What it means is that Tonga already features GPU Compute Context Switch and GPU Graphics Preemption.

AMD Radeon R9 280 series specifications

AMD Radeon R9 285 was the first graphics card with Tonga GPU. Tonga PRO has only 1792 Stream Cores, whereas the full chip called XT would pack 2048 unified shaders. PCWatch also claims that Tonga XT could be equipped with more than 32 ROPs. Configuration of 48 ROPs could be the reason why R9 285X was held back for GeForce 900 announcement. Together with 384-bit interface, this configuration could potentially compete with GTX 970.
Unfortunately R9 285X is still nowhere around, and if it’s not released next month, there is a strong possibility it will launch under 300 series later this year.

AMD Radeon R9 285 Review

AMD Radeon R9 285 - Tonga has arrived

In this review we look at the new AMD Radeon R9 285. Yes this is the new Tonga GPU based product. Tonga should bring the price from high-end gaming towards 249 USD, while (according to AMD) you can game with good image quality settings at WQHD - 2560x1440. Follow us into this review where we'll look at temperatures, noise, performance and go with the latest game titles on the globe.
So as mentioned in the first paragraph, the Radeon R9 285 is based on a the new Tonga GPU. It's still built on the 28nm node from Global Foundries and features bit of a re-design applying the latest architectural improvements. A big focus of the Tonga GPU is actually power efficiency as we'll show you in this review. Tonga retains the basic technologies of the Radeon lineup such as Mantle, TrueAudio and XDMA for CrossFire support. The GPU actually has 2048 shader processors running over 32 compute units with 128 texture memory units. 
The initial consumer graphics card based on Tonga now is the Radeon R9 285, it has 1792 activated stream processors making it perform at GeForce GTX 760 and Radeon HD 7970 level performance levels but with better thermals and lower power consumption. Performance wise this product is going to sit in-between the 280 and 280X. Most of the cards will have two 6-pin power PEG (PCI Express Graphics) headers to give the tweaking experience a little more room next to the 4+2 PWM phase power design. Overall a great card to play the latest games with whilst offering a good memory size versus good price versus the Full HD  / 1080P monitor resolution.
AMD actually releases the card as the perfect WQHD (2560x1440) resolution gaming alternative at the 250 USD level. We received the ASUS R9 285 Strix edition. Head over to the next page where we'll start-up a photo-shoot first though.

AMD to unveil Radeon R9 285 on August 23rd

In few days we will learn new details about Tonga graphics processing unit, as AMD is holding a special event celebrating 30 years of graphics innovation.

This event will be the first place where AMD officially introduces Tonga GPU. Unfortunately, it is just a paper launch.
First is R9 285, equipped with Tonga PRO, which will be available early September. Faster Tonga XT-based Radeon R9 285X will arrive few weeks later. So yes, there are two cards coming, both replacing Tahiti R9 280 series.
Looking at the graphic above, you may find it disappointing that this event is just about Tonga. It is unclear, whether AMD is planning to show more than just a mid-range GPU. There are some rumors that AMD may give us a peak at a new roadmap, or maybe even first samples with HBM memory. AMD is currently working on Hawaii XTX, Maui and Iceland GPUs, all of them could be shown at the event, however we find it highly unlikely. The only processor that is confirmed to be shown at the event is Tonga.

AMD Radeon R9 285 with Tonga GPU

Radeon R9 285 is essentially R9 270X with R9 280 performance. This card is allegedly equipped with Tonga PRO, thus we shall expect R9 285X with Tonga XT sometime soon. R9 285 is a small card, so if you expect triple-fan coolers, that is not likely to happen at launch (but some AIBs will surely try it). Either way, we heard that R9 285 will even be available in mini-ITX form factor.
Radeon R9 285 has 2GB GDDR5 memory across 256b interface. That’s all we know for sure. The core clock is reported at 918 MHz and memory clock is 1375 MHz (5500 MHz effective), that said we have 176 GB/s bandwidth. Normally I would at least put speculated specs here, but since we are not yet sure if Tonga PRO is a fact, I decided to wait for something more solid. The full Tonga chip has the same number of unified cores as Tahiti (2048), the only question is, how many cores does R9 285 have?
All AIB cards have the same display output configuration: two DVIs, one HDMI and one DisplayPort.
The fact that first AIB cards are starting to pop up, R9 285 launch should happen somewhere in the next two weeks.

AMD R9 390X Allegedly Leaked

Videocardz.com has just released some new information about AMD GPUs. The GPUs in question are of course Tonga, Iceland and Hawaii. As for the Maxwell Mobility news, we have already covered the 870MX a while back. Now we had already told you that the speculated Hawaii XTX with 3072 SP doesn’t exist and now it seems that VC is stating the same, citing a Hawaii core with higher clocks.AMD Tonga GPU

AMD Iceland, Tonga and Hawaii Revision Detailed – R9 390X Allegedly Leaked

Now before we begin, the leak from our source also mentions the fabled R9 390X citing some specs. However the leak of the R9 390X is slightly shady. Here are the reasons why:
  • For one thing the presentation lists the node as 28HPM whose full identification is the CLN28HPM (HKMG) process. Which is actually a “High Performance Mobility” node. So the specs are clearly mentioning a mobility node, NOT the usually used GPU High Performance node which should be 28HP.
  • If that doesn’t make you hesitate then for another thing, the slides clearly say Multi Media Marketing Sector and even show a smart TV. They list different tape outs for different device classes with the top most one just being “Graphic Processors”Synapse-Design-500mm-AMD-GPU
  • The difference between an HP and an HPM node is primarily leakage. Mobile devices require very high efficiency so the HPM Node is used, theoretically a GPU built with the HPM node will be very efficient but such a thing is quite unprecedented at the high end. For the low end, it has precedent in Nvidia Kepler (and even mid end AMD I believe) where the 28LP node was used. So it CAN happen but seems a bit far fetched.
  • Bottom Line: So is the leak fake or legit? Here’s the thing: What I don’t get is how everybody saw the specs and made the leap to “Oh this is a Flagship GPU tape out”, this could as easily be a graphics processor for any device. However, these specs CAN happen, but with the information currently available in the leak, seems quite far fetched. I will tell you this though, if this happens with these specs, you are looking at a very power efficient R9 390X.
However, the rest of the detailed leaked appear solid. So without further ado, according to VC Iceland is actually a mobile processor which will later be turned into a desktop counterpart. It will target the mid end spectrum and could be the actual rival to the GM107 SKU. Also Tonga is apparently just the Tahiti Core with a 256b memory bus interface.  However it will not be a replacement but will exist alongside each other until the Radeon R9 300 series is introduced. Also we might be seeing a higher clocked Hawaii Core with any nomenclature including but not limited to Hawaii XTX, Hawaii XT2 etc.  That’s all folks.
