Nvidia unveils Tesla K80: dual-GPU accelerator with 24GB of GDDR5 memory

Nvidia Corp. on Monday unveiled what it claims to be the most powerful compute accelerator on the planet. The Tesla K80 dual-GPU solution sports 4992 stream processors as well as 24GB GDDR5 memory in a bid to offer unprecedented performance for difficult computational challenges, ranging from astrophysics, genomics and quantum chemistry to data analytics.
Nvidia Tesla K80 accelerator carries two brand-new GK210 processors developed specifically for high-performance computing market. Just like the GK110 graphics chips, the GK210 features up to 2880 stream processors (and up to 15 streaming multiprocessor clusters) as well as 384-bit memory bus. However, in a bid to offer better performance in compute applications, Nvidia increased the size of L1 cache of every SM cluster to 128KB (up from 64KB) and enlarged register file of every SM cluster to 512KB (up from 256KB). The new caching sub-system should significantly improve performance in numerous memory-bound applications.

The Tesla K80 accelerator is based on two GK210 processors with 2496 stream processors enabled (4992 stream processors in total). The GPUs operate at clock-rates between 562MHz and 875MHz thanks to GPU Boost technology. 24GB of GDDR5 memory function at 5.0GHz. effective frequency. The Tesla K80 delivers up to 8.74TFLOPS single-precision and up to 2.91TFLOPS double precision peak floating point performance.

“Nvidia GPUs have become the de facto computing platform for the deep learning community,” said Yann LeCun, director of AI research at Facebook, and silver professor of computer science and neural science at New York University. “Because the accuracy of deep learning systems improves as the models and datasets get larger, we always look for the fastest hardware we can find. The Tesla K80 accelerator, with its dual-GPU architecture and large memory, gives us more teraflops and more GB than ever before from a single server, allowing us to make faster progress in deep learning.”

The R9 295X2 is Here

It is here the New R9 295X2, AMD's dual GPU monster. Here is the nitty gritty details of the card:

AMD Radeon™ R9 295X2 Graphics

Engineered for ultimate performance

The AMD Radeon™ R9 295X2 graphics card is the world’s fastest, period.1 A mammoth eight gigabytes of memory and more than 11.5 teraflops of computing power help this card do what it was built to do: be the undisputed graphics champion.

Two AMD Radeon™ R9 series GPUs

When you’re holding all the cards, it only makes sense to double down. We took two of our most advanced, Mantle technology-enabled GPUs and put them together in one cohesive unit. Don’t bet against it.

Factory-fitted liquid cooling system

In an industry first, the AMD Radeon™ R9 295X2 graphics card reference design ships with an advanced closed-loop liquid cooling system developed jointly with Asetek.  Enjoy cool temperatures, quiet operation and consistently high performance, right out of the box.

All metal construction

Built from striking powder coated aluminum, this GPU is beautiful to behold. It’s built to our highest standards, and it sends a message that’s loud and clear: this is serious hardware.

Mantle technology2

There’s optimization, and then there’s Mantle technology. Games enabled with Mantle speak the language of Graphics Core Next to unlock revolutionary performance and image quality.

AMD TrueAudio technology3

Technology that puts the magic of surround sound into every headset and helps give sound engineers the freedom to innovate in ways they’ve never had before. This is what the future of PC gaming sounds like.

Ultra resolution powerhouse

For some gamers, having enough isn’t the point. For them, overkill is merely a starting point. That means extreme resolutions, multiple monitors and sliders to the max. Run ultra settings in 4K with impunity. Or get two million pixels more than 4K by combining five HD screens in an AMD Eyefinity technology setup.4 Either way, the AMD Radeon R9 295X2 barely breaks a sweat.

When developing technology at this level, we know it’s the numbers that count, so here are the headline figures:
  • 11.5 TFLOPS
  • 5632 stream processors
  • 8GB memory
  • 512-bit memory interface x 2
  • Dual liquid-cooled AMD Radeon™ GPUs
  • Asetek closed-loop liquid cooling
